When I was a teen, one of parents’ biggest concerns was their kid throwing a house party while they were away. The fear of kids you don’t know at your house, and what they might be doing there was terrifying.
Welcome to 2017 and the new app called “Houseparty”. With this app, your kids can have a “virtual” party with friends you don’t know. This is app is like a video chatroom which allows up to 8 users to join at once. In addition, users can be in multiple “Houseparties” at the same time.
Also, the app is growing! Business Insider states, “the app launched last February and now has more than 1 million daily active users. The app is the 18th most popular app in the App Store and the third most popular social networking app.”
So what is the concern? Well, let’s say that someone you know invites someone you do not know to your “Houseparty”, well, that person is free to join. What’s worse is that users can snap screenshots of their party without anyone’s consent, so these people that your kids do not know, can take pics of your kids if they somehow end up in the same video chatroom.
In today’s world it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with who your kids are meeting, but by knowing what they are doing, you can stay engaged and at least start a conversation with them about how they should, or should not use these new social apps.
