Nutmeg is a common spice that’s found in many kitchen cabinets, but in some homes it’s being used for more than just cooking.

Drug authorities across the country are hearing more reports about nutmeg as a substance to get kids high.

Note: using nutmeg is not the same as smoking the synthetic marijuana drug commonly known as Spice or K2.

Ingesting, inhaling or smoking significant quantities of ground nutmeg can cause a marijuana-like high and mild hallucinations.  A compound called myristicin, a member of the deliriant family of drugs, is what makes nutmeg an intoxicant.

According to some in the medical field, consuming more than 1 tablespoon of nutmeg in a short period of time can be fatal.
